01 · THE JOKE
Somebody posted about the number 4.
On October 27, 2026 (UTC), Vitalik Buterin replied on X to a post by @pcaversaccio with four images and one line: the original post.

The post he replied to joked that "4 is the new 256-bit security standard," in reaction to a security write-up about the GoAhead web server. That write-up says some TLS traffic had a 1-byte secret, "04".
The four images in his post are all about 4: a headline, a screenshot of that "04" line, a comic where a function returns 4 and the comment calls it random, and a Wikipedia entry on tetraphobia. The internet loved it, so we made a meme coin.
$4 is a separate community meme coin. Vitalik Buterin did not create, endorse or promote it, and he has no connection to it. The post is our source of the joke, nothing more.
The reply
A one-line reply, "they were on to something," with four images attached.
What the images show
- A headline: an Indian certification authority's private keys were compromised, "one of them was the number '4'".
